This YouTube video sparked a yearlong investigation. A disciplinary review board recommended a 32-hour or 4-day suspension. But Chief Daniel Garcia thought the punishment should be more severe and gave Larrison a 40-hour or 5-day suspension. Typically that’s the maximum number of days you can suspend an officer.

So a 4 day punishment is adequate? And the asshole fights a 5 day punishment? They’re both unreasonable! That asshole needs to be fired. What he did could’ve given that girl brain damage.

Look, the cop assaulted her and he did it under the colors of his badge. He should be served with the same assault charges that the general public is charged with.

Teenager dies during opposition protests in Bahrain on second anniversary of uprising

Bahraini security forces have fired teargas, rubber bullets and birdshot at demonstrators hurling rocks and Molotov cocktails in street battles that left one teenager dead and dozens more people injured on the second anniversary of the country’s failed pro-democracy uprising.

The main opposition group, al-Wefaq, said 16-year-old Ali Ahmed Ibrahim Aljazeeri died from his injuries about an hour after being shot early in the morning in the village of Diya, near the capital Manama. “He was shot with three rounds from a birdshot gun and died of critical injuries to the upper body and lungs,” the group said. “Witnesses confirm he was posing no threat to any police officers at the time.”

Dozens of other people were also hurt in the violence, al-Wefaq said, some by teargas and others more seriously. It posted pictures online of some of the wounded, including a photograph of the dead youth with bandages on his stomach.

It accused the Bahraini authorities of deploying “large numbers of armoured vehicles, police cars and buses, convoys of military vehicles and troops … to face peaceful protests demanding freedom and democracy”.

Dozens of videos posted by activists showed groups of youths setting up roadblocks and barricades and hurling stones and firebombs at security forces, who responded with teargas.

Bahrain’s chief of public security, Major General Tariq Hassan al-Hassan, said in a statement that the death came after a group of some 300 rioters attacked police “with rocks, steel rods and Molotov cocktails. Warning shots were fired but failed to disperse the advancing crowd who continued their attack. Officers discharged birdshot to defend themselves.”

Hassan confirmed “at least one protester was injured” and “a short time later, a young man was pronounced dead at [the country’s main hospital] Salmaniya Medical Complex”. He warned the public not to try to “exploit the death for political purposes, or as an excuse to engage in criminal or riotous behaviour” and insisted most areas of the country were calm and traffic was flowing freely in Manama.

Bahrain has seen almost daily protests since the mass protests of 14 February 2011. Demonstrators want greater rights for the country’s Shia majority and an end to the absolute power of the ruling Sunni al-Khalifa dynasty, which picks all key government and military posts. Opposition demands for far-reaching reform include a constitutional monarchy and an elected prime minister to replace Prince Khalifa bin Salman al-Khalifa, who has held the job since independence in 1971 and is an uncle of King Hamad. The government denies discrimination against Shias.

The violence could derail reconciliation talks that resumed last weekend between al-Wefaq and other, mostly Shia Muslim, opposition groups and Sunni envoys. Alistair Burt, the UK foreign office minister, said on Twitter it was “important everyone remains committed to the national consensus dialogue – it’s the only way to promote peace and stability in Bahrain”.

But one prominent activist, Ala’a Shehabi, said the protests showed the irrelevance of the government’s dialogue initiative. “The majority of Bahrainis really just want to live in basic dignity and freedom,” Shehabi, founder of the campaign group Bahrain Watch, told the Guardian. “They don’t believe the current royal family is willing to deliver that.”

Shehabi said the opposition was sceptical about the national consensus dialogue because no senior members of the government or royal family are involved. “To the youth on the street, the dialogue initiative is irrelevant. Even opposition members who have taken part stress the importance of the street protest movement. There is so much scepticism about the sincerity by the government over these talks that no one is really taking them seriously.”

An international inquiry said 35 people died during Bahrain’s uprising; the opposition puts the toll at more than 80.

Amnesty International has called for the Bahraini authorities to release political prisoners, lift restrictions on freedom of expression and prosecute security force members responsible for human rights abuses.

Its Middle East and North Africa deputy director, Hassiba Hadj Sahraoui, said the government “cannot carry on imprisoning people simply because it can’t take criticism. It’s time that people detained simply for exercising their right to freedom of expression be released and for the harassment of other activists to desist.”

Although the officers mocked, taunted, and used expletives (including the word ‘nigger’) to distract my father, the City of White Plains refused to indict the officers for misconduct in the fatal shooting. The Attorney General should initiate an investigation into the officers involved as well as the White Plains Police Department.

That’s why I created a petition on SignOn.org to Chief of the Civil Rights Unit of the Southern District of New York David J. Kennedy, U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara, Assistant Attorney General Thomas E. Perez, and Attorney General Eric H. Holder, Jr., which says:

We, the undersigned, agree and stand in solidarity with the family of Kenneth Chamberlain Jr. in demanding that Eric Holder do the right thing and indict these officers for violating the civil rights of Kenneth Chamberlain Sr. We urge you to also place the White Plains Police Department under federal review.

“White Plains police acted with reckless abandonment and demonstrated a chilling disregard for the quality and sanctity of the life of Mr. Kenneth Chamberlain. Indeed, and at best, the White Plains Police Department violated both their mission statement and their sacred oath of office by facilitating the death of Mr. Chamberlain,” stated Jimmy Bell, Department of Criminal Justice & Sociology, Jackson State University.

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio will begin sending armed “posses” to patrol around Arizona schools today, in response to the shooting less than a month ago at Sandy Hook elementary school.

Arpaio made a name for himself by abusing the civil rights of undocumented immigrants — and for detaining a six year old undocumented child. Now he’s heeding the NRA’s advice that every school needs a “guy with a gun” and is sending out volunteers “with questionable pasts” to guard students:

Arizona’s 3TV reports that Arpaio’s volunteer force is comprised of around 3,000 members, some of which have criminal pasts.

According to CBS5, Arpaio’s office has provided a list of more than 50 schools in unincorporated Maricopa County that will be patrolled by the posses, which are in charge of providing all of their own weapons and equipment. The volunteers will not actually be posted on school campuses, but will instead monitor the areas around the facilities.[…]

The program is getting started as Arpaio prepares to be sworn in for his sixth term on Monday. The volunteer patrols will kick into full gear on Wednesday, and will be rolled out with a press conference.

Arpaio has thought of less friendly uses for firearms in his recent past. Back in November, the sheriff decided to arm his deputies with automatic weapons to stop “illegal aliens” “attempting to escape” his county.

BBC News: The 23-year-old woman gang-raped on a bus in India’s capital Delhi has died at a Singapore hospital, doctors say.

“The patient passed away peacefully at 4:45am on 29 Dec 2012,” a statement from the hospital said. The patient’s family had been by her side, it added.

The 23-year-old had arrived in Singapore on Thursday after undergoing three operations in a Delhi hospital.

Eagle habitat is threatened by development, deforestation, climate change, ecosystem disturbance, poaching, and lead bullets. When a hunters shoot deer, they leave the guts in what’s called a “gut-pile.” These piles are then eaten by foragers, such as the Bald Eagle. Bits and pieces of the lead bullets remain in these piles. And lead is poisonous, as you can see from this heartbreaking video.

Many hunters and enthusiasts, led by the nose by the NRA, are opposed to banning lead bullets. This is because they don’t want the government restricting their “freedom.” It is the ultimate irony.

bald eagles eat the remains of deer left when hunters field dress the animals, adding that lead bullet fragments poison the eagles.

About 30 cases of bald eagle lead poisoning are reported each year, but Henderson said it’s likely many more die.

“We could easily be losing over a hundred eagles a year to this,” he said. “So we just need to provide hunters with the information about making good choices so they have better ammo for their hunting experience, but also nontoxic ammo that will not have follow through consequences for our national bird.”

Henderson explained how the bald eagles are poisoned. “When you get anywhere from 150,000 too 200,000 deer gut piles out in the woods after a successful deer season, that represents a lot of free forage for these birds of prey,” he said. “And if there are tiny lead fragments in those it does not take very much lead to kill that eagle.”

Copper bullets are about twice as expensive as lead ammunition. The cost prevents many hunters from making the switch.

I can’t even say what they did to a child

A mother and her boyfriend are wanted by police after leaving her three-year-old son at hospital so badly beaten that he has been left visually impaired.

The child’s body was covered in burns and bruises, both old and new injuries, authorities said when he was brought in last Wednesday.

Jessica Linscott, 23, and her 27-year-old boyfriend Roland Dow were expected to hand themselves in to police on Monday but are now on the run after disappearing in Plaistow, New Hampshire.
